Without a Prescription

Lowering high blood pressure helps prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems.
Minoxidil is called a vasodilator and works by relaxing blood vessels so blood can flow more easily.
Minoxidil is prescribed to treat high blood pressure.

Contraindications

Minoxidil is contraindicated if you have any of the following conditions:
- If you are pregnant, trying for a baby or breast-feeding;
- If you are taking any other medicines, including those available to buy without a prescription, herbal or homeopathic medicines;
- If you have ever had an allergic reaction to this or any other medicine;
- If you have recently had a heart attack;
- If you suffer from kidney problems, angina (chest pains), or porphyria (a blood disorder);
- If you suffer from phaeochromocytoma (a tumour of the adrenal glands);
- if you are allergic to Minoxidil;
- if you have any other allergies;
- if you have certain lung problem (pulmonary hypertension);
- if you have certain medical conditions;
- if you have certain type of tumor (pheochromocytoma);
- if you have heart problems (chest pain, heart failure);
- if you have kidney disease;
- if you have liver disease;
- if you have recent heart attack (within the last month);
- if you have stroke;

Interactions

Do not take Minoxidil with any of the following drugs:
- Cough-and-cold products;
- Diet aids;
- Guanethidine;
- Ibuprofen for pain/fever reduction;
- Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs-NSAIDs;

Side Effects

Minoxidil side effects that you should report to your health care professional or doctor as soon as possible:
- Abdominal pain/swelling;
- Aracing heartbeat;
- Breast tenderness;
- Chest/jaw/left arm pain;
- Confusion;
- Diarrhoea;
- Difficulty breathing (especially when lying down);
- Dizziness;
- Drowsiness;
- Dry cough;
- Easy bleeding/bruising;
- Fainting;
- Fast/irregular heartbeat;
- Feeling or being sick;
- Fever;
- Hearing/vision loss;
- Itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat);
- Persistent sore throat;
- Rash;
- Severe dizziness;
- Severe heartburn;
- Signs of severe infection;
- Skin rashes;
- Slurred speech;
- Swelling of the hands/ankles/feet;
- Tiredness;
- Trouble breathing;
- Water retention (swelling of the limbs);
- Weakness on one side of the body;
- Weight gain of more than 5 pounds;
- Weight gain;
