Antihistamines reduce itching and swelling and dry up secretions from the nose, eyes, and throat.
Antihistamines work by decreasing the effects of histamine, a chemical the body releases that narrows air passages in the lungs and contributes to inflammation.
Hydroxyzine also relieves itching from allergic reactions and can be used as a sedative before and after general anesthesia.
Hydroxyzine is prescribed to relieve the symptoms of common anxiety and tension and, in combination with other medications, to treat anxiety that results from physical illness.

Contraindications

Hydroxyzine is contraindicated if you have any of the following conditions:
- if you an allergic reaction to Hydroxyzine;
- If you are taking barbiturates;
- If you are taking narcotics;
- If you are taking non-narcotic analgesics;

Interactions

Do not take Hydroxyzine with any of the following drugs:
- Non-Narcotic analgesics such as Motrin and Tylenol;
- Narcotics such as Demerol and Percocet;
- Barbiturates such as Seconal and Phenobarbital;

Side Effects

Hydroxyzine side effects that you should report to your health care professional or doctor as soon as possible:
- Confusion;
- Convulsions;
- Dizziness;
- Drowsiness;
- Dry mouth;
- Headache;
- Muscle weakness;
- Tremors;
- Twitches;

Overdose

Reported Hydroxyzine overdose symptoms are:
- excessive calm;
- your blood pressure may drop;

Dosage

FOR ITCHING DUE TO ALLERGIC CONDITIONS

Children under Age 6

The total dose is 50 milligrams daily, divided into several smaller doses.

Adults

The usual dose is 25 milligrams 3 or 4 times a day.

Children over Age 6

The total dose is 50 to 100 milligrams daily, divided into several smaller doses.

FOR ANXIETY AND TENSION

Children under Age 6

The total dose is 50 milligrams daily, divided into several smaller doses.

Adults

The usual dose is 50 to 100 milligrams 4 times per day.

Children over Age 6

The total dose is 50 to 100 milligrams daily, divided into several smaller doses.

BEFORE AND AFTER GENERAL ANESTHESIA

Children

The usual dose is 0.6 milligram per 2.2 pounds of body weight.

Adults

The usual dose is 50 to 100 milligrams.
