Without a Prescription

Herpes Zoster: Famciclovir (famciclovir) is prescribed for the treatment of acute herpes zoster (shingles), treatment or suppression of recurrent genital herpes in immunocompetent patients, and treatment of recurrent mucocutaneous herpes simplex infections in HIV-infected patients.

Dosage

1. Herpes zoster
Immunocompetent patients
In the treatment of herpes zoster infection the recommended oral dosage
of famciclovir is either 750 once daily for 7 days or 250 mg every 8 hours
for 7 days.
Immunocompromised patients
500 famciclovir three times daily for 10 days.
Famciclovir should be initiated immediately upon diagnosis of herpes zoster,
preferably within 48 hours of the onset of the rash.

2. Genital herpes
First episode of genital herpes
Immunocompetent patients: 250 famciclovir three times daily for 5 days,
initiated as soon as possible after lesion onset.
Immunocompromised patients: 500 twice daily for 7 days.
Episodic treatment of recurrent genital herpes
Immunocompetent patients
For patients with acute recurrent genital herpes infection, the recommended
dose is 125 twice a day for 5 days.
Immunocompromised patients
500 twice daily for 7 days.

Suppressive treatment of recurrent genital herpes
Immunocompetent patients: For suppression of recurrent episodes of genital
herpes in immuno-competent adults, the recommended dose is 250
twice daily for up to one year. The safety and efficacy of famciclovir therapy
beyond one year of treatment have not been established.
In HIV-infected patients
In HIV-infected patients, the recommended dose of oral famciclovir is 500
twice daily, interrupt the treatment at 6-12 months interval to reassess.
In patients with reduced renal function, dosage reduction is recommended
as follows:
Immunocompetent patients: For the treatment of herpes zoster and first-episode
genital herpes infections:

For the treatment of acute recurrent genital herpes infections:

Contraindications

Famciclovir is contraindicated if you have any of the following conditions:
Famciclovir is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to the product, and its components.
