Without a Prescription

Chloroquine is an antimalarial and amebicidal agent prescribed to prevent and treat malaria.

Contraindications

Chloroquine is contraindicated if you have any of the following conditions:
- If you are pregnant, trying for a baby or breast-feeding;
- If you are taking other medicines, including those available to buy without a prescription, herbal or complementary medicines;
- If you have any problems with your eyesight which are not corrected by wearing glasses;
- If you have any problems with your stomach or intestines;
- If you have epilepsy;
- If you have ever had an allergic reaction to this or any other medicine;
- If you have kidney or liver problems;
- If you have myasthenia gravis (a muscle weakening disease);
- If you have psoriasis (a skin disorder);
- If you know you have glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency (a genetic disorder);

Interactions

Do not take Chloroquine with any of the following drugs:
- Terfenadine;
- Quinacrine;
- Macrolide;
- Cyclosporine;
- Cisapride;
- Astemizole;

Side Effects

Chloroquine side effects that you should report to your health care professional or doctor as soon as possible:
- Changes in skin colour;
- Changes in vision or hearing;
- Diarrhea;
- Diarrhoea;
- Feeling dizzy or light-headed;
- Feeling or being sick;
- Headaches;
- Itching;
- Loss of appetite;
- Loss of hair;
- Mild headache;
- Mood changes;
- Nausea;
- Personality changes;
- Ringing in ears;
- Seizures;
- Sensitivity to light;
- Skin rash;
- Sore throat or fever;
- Stomach cramps;
- Vomiting;
- Weakness;

Overdose

Reported Chloroquine overdose symptoms are:
- Drowsiness;
- Headache;
- Nausea;
- Seizures;
- Visual disturbances;
- Vomiting;
