Without a Prescription

Artane is prescribed for the relief of certain symptoms of Parkinson's disease, a brain disorder that causes muscle tremor, stiffness, and weakness.
Artane is prescribed for the treatment of parkinson's disease and extrapyramidal reactions caused by drugs.
Artane is prescribed to control certain side effects induced by antipsychotic drugs such as Thorazine and Haldol.
Artane works by correcting the chemical imbalance that causes Parkinson's disease.

Dosage

ADULTS

Use of Artane with Levodopa:

The usual dose 3mg-6mg daily, divided into equal doses, is usually adequate.

Drug-Induced Parkinsonism:

The daily dosage usually ranges between 5mg-15mg. Your pharmacist may start you on 1mg of Artane a day.

Parkinson's Disease:

The usual dose is 1 mg on the first day.

After the first day, your doctor may increase the dose by 2mg at intervals of 3 to 5 days, until you are taking a total of 6mg-10mg a day.

Overdose

Symptoms of overdose may include:
- Agitation;
- Clumsiness or unsteadiness;
- Delirium;
- Disorientation;
- Fast heartbeat;
- Flushing of skin;
- Hallucinations;
- Psychotic episodes;
- Seizures;
- Severe drowsiness;
- Shortness of breath or troubled breathing;
- Trouble sleeping;
- Unusual warmth;
- Agitation;
- Atonic states of bowels and bladder;
- Confusion;
- Dryness of mucous membranes;
- Hallucinations;
- Hyperthermia in high doses;
- Mydriasis;
- Red face;

Side Effects

Side effects may include:
- Agitation;
- Blurred vision;
- Bowel obstruction;
- Confusion;
- Constipation;
- Delusions;
- Difficulty urinating;
- Dilated pupils;
- Disturbed behavior;
- Drowsiness;
- Dry mouth;
- Hallucinations;
- Headache;
- Nausea;
- Nervousness;
- Pressure in the eye;
- Rapid heartbeat;
- Rash;
- Vomiting;
- Weakness;

Contraindications

Artane is contraindicated in patients with narrow angle glaucoma. Blindness after long-term use due to narrow angle glaucoma has been reported.
Artane is contraindicated if you are known to be sensitive to it or if you have ever had an allergic reaction to it or to other antiparkinson medications of this type.
Artane is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to Artane or to any of the tablet or elixir ingredients.

Artane is contraindicated if you have any of the following conditions:
- If you have urinary tract obstructive disease;
- If you have stomach/intestinal obstructive disease;
- If you have glaucoma;
- If you have enlarged prostate;
