Brand name for acetylsalicylic acid, Anacin is a trusted analgesic. Belonging to the salicylate group of drugs, Anacin is a multipurpose drug. This wonder drug strikes directly the body substances responsible for swelling, pain and increased body temperature. Anacin relieves joint pains caindicated by rheumatoid arthritis without promising to cure it. Amongst the other healing power of Anacin, its effect on cardiac diseases is noteworthy. If prescribed properly, this analgesic can check and control the frequency of cardiac attacks, mini strokes etc. It is effective on cardiac disorders caused by blood clotting. Anacin stops blood from clotting thereby protecting from life threatening accidents. Apart from these, Anacin may also be helpful for relieving headache. However, this should be kept in mind that Anacin has side effects and thus needs to taken with care.

Contraindications

So far, Anacin has not been listed in any of the FDA pregnancy category. But doctors suspect Anacin to cause grave and harmful effects on the growing embryo's heart. Anacin may also reduce the body weight of the nascent baby. It also flows into breast milk causing fatal damages to the feeding baby. It is thus highly recommended to take Anacin only after consulting a doctor during such stages. But Anacin should never be given to children below 19 years suffering from fever, flu symptoms, or chicken pox without consulting a pediatrician, as it increases the risks of Reye's syndrome.

Side Effects

Anacin may give birth to serious and fatal side effects like breathing trouble, closed throat, swollen lips, tongue, or face, scaling fever, blood in the urine or vomit, drowsiness, logical confusion, or hallucinations.
Users of Anacin quite often face side effects like heartburn or indigestion, ringing in the ears, stomach cramps with pain and uneasiness, vomiting. These side effects are known to be less harmful.
Side effects like bloody, black and tarry stools, nagging and excruciating headache, skin rash with itching are rare but found.

Overdose

So far no cases of Anacin overdose with fatal consequences have been reported. But the possibilities cannot be ruled out. Patients experience ringing in the ears, headache, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, confusion, hallucinations, coma, seizures, rapid breathing, and fever due to Anacin overdose. Whereas children experience drowsiness, behavioral pattern, racing heart beat due to higher intake of Anacin. Consult your doctor as soon as you can make out that you have taken in a double dose.
On the other hand, missing a dose of Anacin is not harmful. Just pop in the dose as soon as you remember that you have missed one. But if it is already time for the next dose, just go on and take the scheduled one and forget about the last one. Avoid taking double dose at all costs. Remember that the drug needs to be taken in proper dose regularly for best results.

Intake Guidelines

Rely on your doctor for the best usage guidelines. Normally Anacin is taken with a full glass of water or milk. Anacin should be taken with food or an antacid to reduce chances of stomach upset. However, if you are on Enteric-coated Anacin, don't take in antacid. Make it a point not to chew, break or crush the tablets. It is recommended not to take in alcohol during medication with Anacin as the combination can have fatal effects on stomach. However, talk to a doctor if you have a habit of taking more than three alcoholic beverages a day. Don't forget to store Anacin at room temperature for effective results.
